NFU Mutual joins Devon YFC campaign to support future rural business leaders

Leading rural insurer NFU Mutual is supporting the next generation of rural business leaders as it joins Devon Young Farmers Clubs for a new awareness campaign.

As part of its three-year sponsorship of Devon YFC, NFU Mutual is helping to recognise the crucial role young people will play in the future of the South West’s rural economy. It aims to nurture their expertise and experience, helping them to grow in all areas of their lives.

From mental health support to public speaking training, the benefits Devon YFC offers are greater than many people may realise.

Ahead of the YFC’s 100th anniversary next year, the ‘We Grow Futures’ campaign is being launched to help empower members and encourage more young people to be a part of Devon YFC’s work.

The initiative not only celebrates the success of the county’s members, but also promotes how the club plays an active role in their development into the working world.

Launched at their AGM on Thursday, November 26, 2020, members and attendees at the virtual event were shown a video sharing how members had grown through being a YFC member.

Growing confidence, growing skills and growing their networks were the key benefits they discussed, while others highlighted how the campaign has helped their mental health. One member said: “I’ve grown by knowing it’s okay not to be okay.”

Devon YFC supports young people aged from 10 to 26 years old. Central to its offering is its ‘Skills for Life’ programme. Ranging from public speaking to car maintenance, members can work towards a YFC Certificate of Achievement and other professional qualifications.

They can also play an active role in fundraising for local charities, conservation and countryside action, and performing arts, as well as opportunities for travel. The organisation’s prestigious agri-debates are also a popular feature, discussing the opportunities and challenges facing South West farmers.

Matt Darke, Devon YFC County Chairman, explained:

Being part of Devon YFC offers so much more than the chance to socialise with like-minded people, which is what many people may associate us with. It also gives youngsters the opportunity to grow, in every sense of the word. Members are really encouraged to pursue their interests and utilise all of the activities and support available to equip themselves for the world of work, whilst still having some fun and friendly competition along the way.

Phoebe Ridley of NFU Mutual’s South West team, said:

I am excited to see this campaign develop and encourage members, previous members and supporters of the federation to get behind the We Grow Futures campaign. I challenge each club to get creative, and get shouting about what they really do.

We’re committed to supporting the next generation of farmers and other professionals who will play a major role in keeping our communities and rural economy vibrant.  In the current climate, perhaps more than ever, the support and skills that Devon YFC provides for its members are vital in developing young people, supporting their mental and physical health, and connecting communities, all enabling them to grow their futures.
